Black & White Scholarship Ball
The Albany (NY) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and Kappa Charities of the Greater Capital Region, Inc. held its 2013 Black & White Scholarship Ball on Saturday, May 4, 2013. Close to 230 people attended the event. It was held at the Colonie Golf and Country Club located at 141 Maple Road Route 85, Voorheesville, NY 12186. Over $10,000 in scholarships and prizes were handed out. The Scholarship Ball is our major fundraising event which supports our scholarship and mentorship programs. Since our scholarship fund's inception, more than 50 students in the Capital District area have received scholarships.
A very special part of this great event acknowledged members of the community who have made a positive impact in the areas of community service, mentorship and furthering the education of our youths. Since our fraternity's beginning in 1911 on the campus of Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, our motto has been "Achievement in Every Field of Human Endeavor." - Shirley Ann Jackson, Ph.D, President of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Educational Leadership Award)
- Betty P. Shadrick, Ph.D, Assistant Dean of Graduate Studies, University at Albany (Educational Leadership Award)
- Reverend Leonard D. Comithier Jr., Pastor of Macedonia Baptist Church (Community Service Award)
- David Bowie, Exchequer, Albany (NY) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. (Distinguished Service Award)
The keynote speaker for the evening was Dr. John B. King, Commissioner, New York State Education Department.
Kappa Charities of the Greater Capital Region, Inc. (KCGCR) is a tax-exempt non-profit organization. It was founded by the Albany (NY) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated. KCGCR’s mission is to create strong communities and assist area youths in developing options and increased opportunities for success. This is delivered through the Fraternity’s Guide Right Program and Kappa League. KCGCR provides scholarships and other financial aid to deserving youths to assist them with their pursuit of higher education.
